1984 Audi Quattro Turbo 10V raises £20,350 for charity

Classic Car Auctions (CCA) auctioned a special 1984 Audi Quattro Turbo 10V at their Warwickshire Event Centre sale on 15th September – it was once restored on TV, and it was being sold to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support and the Mesothelioma UK Trust. The restored Quattro Turbo raised £20,350 for the charities after being left to them by its last owner, Barry Hollamby, who passed away in 2016 after a long illness with asbestos-related cancer.

The right-hand drive, 2.1L 1984 Audi Quattro Turbo 10V manual was owned by Barry for 14 years and has had five owners from new. During Barry’s ownership the car was even featured in Series 3 of Channel 4’s popular Car S.O.S, which saw Tim Shaw and Fuzz Townsend restore the car at a time when his poor health left Barry unable to complete work on the car himself.

The Audi was returned to Barry in the presence of his family and friends in the emotional and memorable episode.

“We were absolutely honoured to have been entrusted with the sale of this very special Audi Quattro,’ explained Gary Dunne, auction manager at CCA. ‘We know that Barry treasured his Quattro over the years and that it was his wish that it be sold to benefit these two charities. We were glad to do Barry’s legacy justice and raise important funds for these two invaluable charities.”

James Stebbings, Head of Legacy Income at Macmillan Cancer Support, explained: “Last year, gifts in wills accounted for almost a third of Macmillan’s income. As a charity that receives no government funding and relies entirely on the generosity of the public, we are hugely grateful for donations such as the fantastic car left by Barry. Every penny raised will be used to support people with cancer to live life as fully as they can.”

Meanwhile, Jill Lemon from Mesothelioma UK Charitable Trust commented: “We are a national specialist resource centre, specifically for the asbestos-related cancer, mesothelioma.

The generosity and support from Barry as well as CCA will help us to promote the development of specialist mesothelioma nursing practice and fund the 18 specialist nursing posts around the UK.”
