2019 Audi A4 B9 Typ 8W gets subtle updates and standard nav

Audi’s designers have sharpened their pencils and given the A4 and A4 Avant executive cars tighter creases and slim headlights to bring them in line with its latest look. Not only do they look more modern, there’s also new equipment levels and standard navigation systems throughout the range. Order books open later this summer, before the first deliveries towards the end of the year.

Design changes begin with new front and rear bumpers, extended side skirts and a satin finish for the singleframe grille and air intakes. The Avant estate gets spoilers at either side of the rear window for improved aerodynamics, and trapezoidal tailpipes at either side of a rear diffuser. SE models retain 17-inch alloy wheels but with a new design, while Sport models get new, larger 18-inch wheels. Choose an S line or Black Edition and there’s a new 3D-look grille and lower air intakes with a honeycomb motif. Wheels have grown to 19-inches for the S line and there are new tailpipes here too, as well as the option of a new Turbo Blue colour for the Black Edition.

Inside, entry-level SE trims now gain MMI navigation as standard, matching BMW’s 3 Series F30/F31. The other noticeable change inside is a seven-inch colour instrument cluster that replaces the monochrome display that was two inches smaller. The multi-function steering wheel has also been redesigned to allow the control of a wider range of functions and all models now get power folding door mirrors. Step up to Sport trim and its specification list now includes four-way lumbar adjustment for the front seats, while S line and Black Edition models now feature automatic headlight dipping at night.

There’s no mention of any alteration to engines for the 2019 model year cars, so we assume that they will continue as before in 148 and 187bhp 2.0-litre TDI guises, or 215 and 268bhp with the punchier 3.0-litre TDI units. The A4 will, however, adopt the Audi’s new model naming policy, with the most powerful engine expected to adopt a 45 or 50 TDI nameplate, in line with the latest versions of the A6, A7 and A8.
