Full details have been announced for the updated Mazda CX-3 crossover, first seen at the New York motor show, which gets a larger 1.8-litre diesel engine, updated interior and a subtle exterior makeover, helping maintain its showroom appeal. It is available to buy now, with the sole diesel version costing £22,895 in Sport Nav+ two-wheel-drive guise.
REFRESHED 2019 Mazda CX-3 GETS NEW 1.8-LITRE DIESEL ENGINE
Despite being larger, the debuting 1.8 SkyActiv-D engine is said to offer a “class-leading blend of performance, economy and refinement” and Mazda’s engineers have clearly focussed on efficiency, with only a modest 10bhp power increase to 113bhp. The new engine can achieve up to 64.2mpg and CO2 emissions of 114g/km under the latest WLTP testing cycle, designed to better replicate real-world driving conditions. The new 1.8-litre powerplant is set to make an appearance in next year’s 3 hatchback, too.
Exterior design changes include a new grille and black side pillars, for a more coupé-like appearance, while customers will be able to order the CX-3 finished in Mazda’s updated Soul Red crystal metallic paintwork, as already seen on the larger CX-5. LED front fog lights and privacy glass are standard on diesel versions, as well as LED headlights and rear lights, 18-inch alloy wheels and chrome effect bumper and side trims.
Adopting an electric handbrake has brought some changes inside, freeing up more room so that the infotainment controls are now better positioned and adding a central storage area with a padded armrest. New front seat cushions are said to boost comfort and support, while the rear seats get a central armrest with cupholders for added convenience. Improved door sills, thicker sound insulation, revised rear glass and a chunkier headliner are all said to make the interior quieter on the move.
To match the improved refinement, revised suspension settings are designed for smoother ride comfort and enhanced handling, with the coil springs, dampers and front anti-roll bars all changed. Mazda has also recalibrated the electric power steering for a more consistent feel.
