A new British engineering specialist, Lunaz, has revealed details of an electric conversion for the XK 120, building a prototype based on a 1953 FHC. The car is powered by twin motors that produce 700NM (516lb ft) from zero engine speed and 375bhp, and features an 80kWh battery pack made up from brand-new automotive-quality lithium ion battery cells, built in-house by Lunaz.
The pack is split into two halves with one half mounted under the bonnet where the engine once was, and the other half under the boot floor where the petrol tank used to be.
The classic Monza-style aluminium filler cap hides a CHAdeMO fastcharging socket. The car also has a type 2 AC socket for regular speed charging. Lunaz founder David Lorenz, who was driven by a desire to have a car such as a 1953 Jaguar as his daily driver, explains the company’s philosophy, “Lunaz takes a history we all love and gives it a bright future. We are innovating to create cars that are usable, dynamic and stand as the ultimate drivers’ classics.”
The electric XK 120 is currently in its final testing phase, and Lunaz is accepting commissions for similar cars with prices starting at £350,000.
