Two Ton Muscle. Recently, Chevrolet took their hyperactive new Camaro ZL1 coupe over to Germany, to the Papenburg 7.6-mile high-speed oval to try a few speed tests.
The 10-speed auto car, stock apart from safety and datalogging equipment and 44psi in the stock Goodyear tyres, didn’t lift off the throttle in the 49.7° banked turns and managed a whopping 198mph average – 193.3mph in one direction around the oval; 202.3mph in the other.
It was a ZL1 that paced the Daytona 500 just as this mag was going to print, with four-time champ and three-time Daytona 500 winner Jeff Gordon at the wheel. The supporting races also featured Chevy pace cars, a Silverado pacing the Camping World Truck series race, and a Camaro SS in a rather vivid shade of Krypton Green pacing the Xfinity series race. Kurt Busch took the laurels for the 500 itself.
