An electric storm 2019 BMW i3 I01

An electric storm! The i3 has certainly proved a popular seller for BMW, and the i3s model has added even more appeal. So, as electric and hybrid vehicles continue to make impressive strides forward, surely our thinking needs to move forward, too?

Of course, if hybrid and electric vehicles turn out to be our motoring future, there will be plenty of owners looking to put an individual stamp on their vehicles. Aftermarket specialists would be foolish to disregard that prospect, and one that’s certainly not falling into that trap is suspension expert, Eibach.

The company is already heavily involved with Formula-E, and working closely with Tesla, so it fully appreciates the exciting potential offered by electric vehicles. Ben Thompson, Eibach’s UK sales manager, said: “We’re on the cusp of serious change within the automotive industry, and there’s already a decent market for electric cars.

“As a quality, aftermarket suspension manufacturer, we need to ensure we include these cars in our catalogue forecast. Even when owners consider the environment and financial implications first and foremost, plenty still want a decent-handling vehicle to drive, and that’s what we’re good at producing. If we can make cars like the BMW i3 and i3s, handle better – and possibly become even more efficient – surely that’s a good thing.”

So, with the i3 in mind, Eibach engineers have developed its popular up-rated spring package – the Pro-Kit. This four-spring kit will lower the i3 by 25mm at front and 15mm at the rear and, with the S model, by 15mm at the front and 10 at the rear. By lowering the car’s centre of gravity, handling is improved while adding a touch of attitude to its overall styling.

Made from high-strength Silicon Chrome Vanadium steel (the material Eibach uses for all its competition springs, including F1 equipment), these progressively wound springs are computer-matched to the factory dampers, making them a simple yet very effective upgrade solution.

There are currently two kits available; one for the electric model and one for the Range Extender version. Both are priced at £275.74 (plus VAT), and are supplied with full TUV Approval and a five-year warranty.
